Scandi style gender neutral bedroom idea for kids

Recently I have created a gender neutral scandi childrens bedroom as part of my son’s nursery a makeover and turned it into a big boy’s bedroom in time for him moving from his baby cot into a big boy’s bed. I have kept the overall decor of the room the same which is a scandi style inspired decor style with a woodland theme, but have made some small tweaks for very little expense that has made his bedroom more grown-up for him.

When we first moved into this house the room that is now George’s was a dingy old blue room with yellowing woodwork and artex ceiling. I gave it an injection of personality when I first turned it into his nursery, a makeover you can read about in this post. But, it had never been quite finished and I took the opportunity to improve it when reshuffling the room to make way for George’s new bed.

George’s new bed is toddler size as a full single would not fit in this gap

Gender Neutral Teepee Bed

It was so difficult choosing George his first proper bed. The room was slightly too small for a single unless I placed it under the window, but with the radiator being there and George being an avid climbed, I felt it wasn’t the safest option. So I decided to opt for a toddler size bed so I could fit it in to the right hand nook. A single mattress measures 190cm in length and a toddler bed measures 140cm so it won’t last him as many years as a full single but hopefully by the time we need to swap it windowsill gymnastics won’t be as likely. I chose this amazing gender neutral teepee bed from Wayfair (click here) which was also a really good price and was delivered really quickly.

I upcycled this old Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers using Austin & Monkey decals

Upcycled Hemnes Chest of Drawers

I keep all of George’s clothes in a large 8 drawer Ikea Hemnes chest, which has stood the test of time but was just a bit boring for his new colourful scandi style bedroom. So I decided to upcycle them using a set of Austin & Monkey decals in the Scandi Mountain pattern, available to purchase here. I have also upcycled Evie’s old Ikea wardrobe using the same product and you can read all about how to use them in this post. It is such a quick and impactful way of creating a work of art in a child’s bedroom and for very little cost.

Mountain Wall Decor

I really wanted to paint some graphic mountains on George’s wall as part of this makeover but couldn’t find the exact design I was looking for on Pinterest. I wanted something subtle and wanted to incorporate a paint effect in it too. I used frog tape to mark out the shapes of the mountains, and used left over emulsion from other decorating projects to paint them using a roller: cornforth white, and ammonite for the mountain body, and a colour matched mustard that matches George’s canopy.
