5 easy and useful tips for styling a bedside table

Welcome to Pages of Emma’s Sunday Style Series. Episode one is all about how to style your bedside table. If you’re anything like me you will be living in a situation where you simply have to make do and mend with the items you already have. Buying our house was the most financially crippling decision we ever made…apart from having children, and planning a wedding of course, haha! So we have furnished it with what we had, and what we could procure cheaply and easily. This means that a lot of the furniture we have isn’t necessarily wat we would ideally choose.

But this doesn’t have to mean that you don’t get to love your house and the rooms within it. You just need to get a little bit clever about how you style your spaces. I have created the Sunday Style Series to help to show you all how you can style different parts of your home to look like glorious show homes all without spending very much money at all or having to replace big pieces of furniture which is just really difficult to afford.

Each week I will share with you via www.pagesofemma.co.uk and my instagram feed @pagesofemma my latest episode of Sunday Style Series using the hashtag #sundaystyleseries making the content easy to search and find. This week’s Sunday Style Series content is all about how to style your bedside table. I have started with bedside table styling because it is one of the smallest surfaces in the house and therefore, you could argue, one of the hardest to style and make something beautiful of. Let me show you how to turn this space into something spectacular for next to no cost.

1. Bedside Mirrors

Make your room look bigger and brighter by reflecting light with mirrors above your bedside tables. Ensure the mirrors you hang are no wider than the side table itself if your tables are a traditional squared off shape. If you have round tables you can get away with a mirror that’s a little wider than your tables. Make sure to hang your mirror so you can easily look in to it without stooping. I’ve chosen long mirrors and you wouldn’t believe how much they cost…or should I say, how little?! Click this link to see and shop my mirror choice. Choosing this design element is a very elegant decor choice for a grown up bedroom and can create really romantic lighting with a low wattage of bulb.

2. Practical Bedside Decor

When styling your bedside table take a minute to consider what you actually NEED in that space. You want to ensure that you have all of those things to hand, but consider ways to make it nice and pretty to do so. For me, I want to have beside me:

  • earplugs and eye mask
  • jewellery and rings
  • the body cream I put on my arms at night
  • face night cream
  • a glass of water
  • pillow spray
  • book
  • phone charger
Consider what useful items you could display ornamentally on your bedside, like night creams, novels and pillow sprays

Don’t hide these things in a drawer, make them part of you styling by using them as bedside props. Ok, except maybe the phone charger…plug that in using an extension cable under the bed and hide that well out of sight, haha!

3. Clever Bedside Table Storage

Have you noticed on my instagram feed that I have a little chest of drawers sitting on top of my bedside chest? I know it sounds crazy, so have a look at the pic to see what I mean. Popping something small inside a large bedside drawer is such a nightmare because you can spend an age rooting around trying to find it again and things end up lost. So no rings, ear plugs or lip balms in your main drawers, instead consider having a little extra storage on top. See below some of the prettiest examples of miniature drawers:

Little chests like this add height and interest to your bedside, rather than everything being the same height. Plus you don’t lose surface space and can prop things on top for extra display space.

Little drawers not your cup of tea, no worries, add some interest with a jewellery stand instead and display your most treasured treasures rather than hiding them away.

4. Bedside Table Drawer Handles

Who says drawer pulls have to be dull? Even if you have the teeniest tiniest bedside tables in the world, they can be styled up to the nines with some gorgeous drawer pulls. I highly recommend checking out your local TK Maxx or Homesense for what bargains they may have in store. If you have 4 or fewer drawers then you are may find some gorgeous drawer pulls there. Anything more than that, or if you are more limited on your style or colour preferences, then head to Etsy to explore the amazing range of hand made options by sellers and makers on there. These are some of my favourite Etsy options:

5. Bedside Table Lighting

Space will define for you what kind of light you want to have. If you have teeny tiny bedside tables or a mountain of books you pick from each evening, then you might want to consider a wall-mounted or cable hung light rather than a traditional table lamp. “Wall lights need to be wired into the wall and I can’t afford an electrician, it’s too much effort” I hear you say. Not anymore, in our spare room I have hung a wall-mounted light that plugs in to a normal socket via normal wire and three-pronged plug.

I am also completely obsessed with Creative Cables and would highly recommend checking out their Instagram page for lots of ideas on how you can build your cable, holder, and bulb combinations of choice…these guys are perfect for small space living and even mounting hanging lights from the ceiling without any wiring involved.
